Franz Peter of Austria, also known as Emperor Franz Joseph I, was born on August 18, 1830, in Vienna, Austria. He became the Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary in 1848 after the abdication of his uncle, Ferdinand I. Franz Joseph is considered to be one of Europe's longest-reigning monarchs, having ruled for 68 years until his death on November 21, 1916. During his reign, he oversaw significant political and social changes in Austria-Hungary, including the 1867 Ausgleich which established the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary. He was also known for his personal tragedies, including the assassination of his wife Empress Elisabeth (Sisi) in 1898 and the suicide of his son and heir Archduke Rudolf in 1889. Despite his austere demeanor and devotion to duty, Franz Joseph was beloved by his people and remains an important figure in Austrian and Hungarian history.
